Rumpke proudly owns and operates the Montgomery County Landfill in Jeffersonville, Ky. Located on Larison Road, we’re just a short drive from the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway. Covering more than 1,000 acres, including 80 acres currently available for waste disposal, the Montgomery County Landfill has been in good hands since Rumpke purchased it in 1989. Ever since, we’ve been dedicated to providing valuable local trash services and recycling services for residents of Montgomery County, including the communities of Camargo, Jeffersonville, Judy, Levee, and Mount Sterling.

About Rumpke’s Montgomery County Landfill
Current Operations
- Rumpke is a family‐owned and operated business, founded in 1932 by William Rumpke near Cincinnati, Ohio.
- The Montgomery County Landfill has been in operation since 1972.
- Rumpke purchased the site in 1989 and has continued to operate the facility as a valuable asset to Montgomery County.
- The landfill is permitted to receive municipal solid waste (MSW) and construction demolition debris (CDD).
- The site currently consists of more than 1,000 acres, with 97.25 acres permitted for waste disposal. Currently, 80 acres are available for waste disposal.
- The site receives 1,000-1,200 tons per day.
- About 68% of waste comes from six central Kentucky counties: Montgomery, Clark, Fayette, Garrard, Madison and Scott. The remaining 32% comes from 30 central and easter Kentucky counties.
- Based on current volumes, the landfill has about 7.5 years of remaining capacity.
- In 2008, the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection issued Rumpke a permit to expand the landfill, securing affordable, local disposal services for an additional 20 years.
- The landfill has 13 full-time employees at the site.
Site Features
- The landfill collects and disposes of approximately 10 million gallons of leachate per year. Leachate is hauled from the site with tanker truck to a water treatment plant.
- In 2024, Archaea Energy, a subsidiary of BP, began converting landfill gas and adding it to a natural gas pipeline. This can provide enough natural gas for more than 13,000 homes.
- Rumpke uses Surface Emissions Monitoring, known as SEMS scans, to monitor any escaping gas across the landfill’s surface. This allows for additional cover soils or repairs around a gas well, if needed.
- Rumpke added two odor neutralizing systems that eliminate odors instead of masking them through oxidation principles.
- Haul roads are watered daily as necessary.
- The site has seven ponds (six currently in use and one to be built) to collect stormwater runoff and prevent sediment from leaving the site. The ponds are inspected weekly and sampled monthly.
- There are 22 groundwater wells and 103 total (68 wells and 35 caissons) landfill gas monitoring systems.
- The Kentucky Division of Solid Waste and Montgomery County Solid Waste Department conducts regular inspections.
